A fine original creation by Kenneth Cathcart in 1949 following the 1947 public renovation of the San Francisco Cable Car system. Provided today as a 16" x 20" print to order, inkjet print on artist bond paper for long term durability and minimal fade over time. Additonal sizes available by request via email.
Covers the history of Steam Trains, Streetcars, Trolleys, Trams, Omnibuses, Hotel Coaches and Horse Cars, along with systems unique to San Francisco, like the Cable Cars, the Balloon Car and the BobTail cars. Map includes the locations of old roads, all early RR & streetcar routes and important or cultural sites along the way. It highlights the vibrant market of competition among transit companies for access to the dune fields of the western city in the constant search for new ground. First step to building a new neighborhood is to bring in transit. San Francisco did this through private enterprise until around 1915, at which time through 1933, we established Muni in San Francisco with funding through ballot measures and public vote.
