Excellent insert map of Chicago 10 years before its devastating fire of 1871 and the digging of a canal , effectively changing of the course of a river to resolve local sanitation issues. This is a very dirty and dangerous Chicago in 1860 with the herding of cattle straight into downtown for slaughter. Mitchell's is a Philadelphia based printer-publisher using steel engraving and lithography with hand water color as a secondary process done by women and children to enhance and define the detail of the map before binding into an atlas for the year, in this case 1860 .
