Part of a senatorial document highlighting the explorations of California . Surveyed and drawn by order of General Riley , commanding the 10th military department. Worked performed by Lt John Derby, surveyor, noted gentleman and famous satire writer also known as John Phoenix. The maps of Lt derby were considered among the most reliable by the miners with enough good fortune or genius to have used these maps to actually find the gold fields of California in 1849 . Often referred to in the written records of men who experienced the gold rush in person, Derby's maps included the first water surveys for the region .
